Cannon Beach is a city in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. Its population was 1,690 at the 2010 census. The house sits about 5 miles south of downtown Cannon Beach in Arch Cape and sleeps up to 10 people, which is also the maximum number of guests who can be in the house at any time. With two living areas, large L-shaped couches and a roomy kitchen, the house is also great for kids with a “Finding Nemo” mural in one of the bedrooms. Hug Point State Recreation Site about 1.4 miles north features trails and tide pools for amazing days on the Coast.

A few steps away sits the Beach Haven Ocean Front (Cannon Beach Vacation Rentals), which lives up to its name with a private path that leads directly down to Arch Cape beach just 36 steps away. If you come to Cannon Beach in the off-season, there’s a good chance you’ll spot gray whales in migration. They’re hard to miss when approximately 18,000 of them make their way up and down over 12,000 miles of coastline! Whale spring migration peak happens from mid-March to mid-April, and winter migration reaches its peak from mid-December to mid-January. Some optimal viewpoints include Ecola State Park or a cozy ocean-front hotel room.

The Beach & Haystack Rock

Nearly four miles of sandy beach stretch out north and south of downtown Cannon Beach with Oregon’s iconic Haystack Rock sitting approximately midway on this scenic paradise. Venture further, and you’ll find more beaches and dramatic rock formations that have made the Oregon Coast famous for its picturesque landscapes.

Ecola State Park

Just minutes from downtown Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park tops the not-to-be-missed list of viewpoints and recreation areas. A $5 State Parks day-use fee is required for parking, and it’s the best bargain of any attraction on the Oregon Coast.

Arcadia Beach

A picnic area and beach access at the Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site are just two miles south of Cannon Beach. The beach features rock formations and tidepools. Walk north to Silver Point or about a mile south to Hug Point.

Hug Point

About three miles south of Cannon Beach is Hug Point State Recreation Area. Hug Point features beach access, and, at lower tides, you can walk north just around the point where you will find sea caves, a small waterfall, and the remains of the old roadway that once hugged the cliff side. The roadway is one of the rare remnants from when the beach was the main thoroughfare before the construction of the Coast Highway. When tides allow, you can walk south from Hug Point a mile or more to the beach at Arch Cape.

Oswald West State Park

About ten minutes south of Cannon Beach, you enter Oswald West State Park. The park encompasses nearly 2,500 acres with several miles of hiking trails, including an easy path to the beautiful cove of Short Sand Beach and sky-high scenic ocean viewpoints from highway turnouts on the edge of Neahkahnie Mountain. The main Oswald West State Park parking area offers easy access to shady picnic areas and walking paths.

Small Beach Town Charm

While the scenic surroundings are the number one attraction, Cannon Beach also offers the quintessential small beach town experience on the Oregon Coast. Wander the picturesque sidewalks and courtyards of downtown Cannon Beach to discover art galleries, specialty shops, restaurants, and public art. Cannon Beach is easy and enjoyable to explore on foot.

What is the weather like? What should I pack?

The North Oregon Coast is dominated by a cool marine climate most of the year. Summertime highs average in the upper 60s, and wintertime lows drop into the high 30s but rarely to freezing. Our rainiest months are November to January, with an average of up to 10 inches per month, although the rains most often present as a drizzle. Casual walking shoes that adapt to the beach, trail, or town are good. It is always advisable to dress in layers as the weather can occasionally be unpredictable. Savvy Oregon Coast travelers are always ready for unseasonably warm, cool, or wet conditions.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: SUNSET EMPIRE TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT HAS SUSPENDED ALL SERVICES AS OF APRIL 29TH. A DATE TO RESTORE SERVICES HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.

From Portland, the NorthWest POINT offers daily bus service between Portland and Cannon Beach. Once in Cannon Beach, Sunset Empire Transportation District offers daily local routes and additional shuttle services during the summer.
