Presidential Scholarship

Each year, the college selects top entering musicians to receive this scholarship. The scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition, on-campus housing, the meal plan, laptop*, software, and the comprehensive fee**, is renewable over four years of study. Students demonstrating the highest musical merit and highest financial need are automatically nominated and selected for this exclusive award. No application or request for consideration is necessary.

Only Berklee College of Music Presidential Scholars receive the laptop portion of their scholarship in their first semester. Boston Conservatory at Berklee Presidential Scholars do not receive the laptop.

Health insurance, travel, books, and miscellaneous fees are not included.

Donor Scholarships and Endowed Funds

We have several scholarships funded by specific donors. These awards are sometimes automatically granted during the admissions process, and during the academic year some students may have a portion of their standard scholarship replaced by a donor or endowed fund. Berklee awards more than $60 million annually in institutional scholarships and grants to students from Berklee College of Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Berklee Valencia, Berklee NYC, and Berklee Online. Approximately 40 percent of entering campus students are awarded institutional aid, with an average award covering 40 percent of tuition.

Scholarships for Entering Students

All entering undergraduate and graduate students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships as part of the admissions process when applying to the College, Conservatory, and Berklee NYC. Berklee Valencia graduate applicants submit a scholarship application within their admissions application portal.

Berklee College of Music students also have the opportunity to submit materials within their admissions application to have their songwriting and composition abilities considered. Undergraduate scholarships are awarded for up to eight total semesters of enrollment, and are automatically renewed each semester provided students are meeting the terms and conditions of their scholarship.

Institutional Need-Based Grants

Additionally, Berklee College of Music entering undergraduate domestic students who submit a CSS Profile by the posted deadlines will automatically be considered for need-based institutional grants. Because Berklee need-based funding is limited, students who demonstrate high financial need are given priority.

Thrive Scholarship

The Thrive Scholarship is an initiative designed to invest in continuing undergraduate students who have demonstrated academic achievement, demonstrated financial need, and are on track to graduate on time.

Continuing undergraduate Boston campus students should ensure they have a CSS Profile on file to be considered for the Thrive Scholarship. Boston Conservatory domestic students should have a FAFSA on file.

Thrive Scholarship: Criteria and Selection Process

The Thrive Scholarship is a Berklee initiative that is designed to invest in continuing undergraduate (degree and diploma) students at Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory at Berklee* who have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need, and are on track to graduate on time.

We know that students who maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better, consistently attempt and complete at least 15 credits each semester, and have good plans in place to manage their financial and academic requirements are more likely to graduate, and are well positioned to reach their full creative and career potential. Therefore, the goal of this program is to help alleviate some of the financial strain that continuing students face and assist them through graduation with scholarship support.

Thrive Scholarship Selection Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, students must:

• be a Berklee College of Music undergraduate student or Boston Conservatory at Berklee undergraduate student within their third, fourth, fifth, or sixth semester;
• be on track to complete their program within eight semesters/four years;
• maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA;
• maintain a minimum 94 percent completion percentage;
• not be on disciplinary action or probation; and
• have demonstrated financial need (a FAFSA and/or CSS Profile must be on file; Conservatory students must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant or be in the BSI Program).

Selection Process

At the conclusion of the spring semester each year, the Thrive Scholarship committee meets to conduct a thorough and exhaustive review of all eligible students who meet the criteria above. Students who are selected to receive the scholarship will be notified via email in the early summer months, generally in May or June. Awards are issued for the fall and spring semesters of the upcoming academic year.

Please note that it is not possible to notify students who are not selected.

Eligible students meeting the Thrive Scholarship criteria are automatically considered for the scholarship. No application is necessary, and students do not need to request consideration.

Thrive Scholarship Program Conditions and Policies

Awarded students must maintain the following terms and conditions to continue to be eligible for this scholarship:

• The Thrive Scholarship is valid for undergraduate study at the Boston or Valencia campuses.
• Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Students must maintain at least a 94 percent completion percentage (completed credits divided by attempted credits).
• Students must enroll in a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester. (Exceptions may be requested.)
• Students must meet the required number of earned credits to become a third–sixth semester student.
• Students must participate in ongoing financial and academic advising, as well as relevant career planning programs, to ensure they are on track to graduate on time.
• Students must demonstrate financial need based on an analysis of the submitted FAFSA and/or CSS Profile. The FAFSA must be submitted each year by May 1 to show continued financial need. The CSS Profile is only submitted one time.
• For Conservatory students, they must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and/or be a participant in the Black Scholars Initiative program.
• Scholarships are limited for the remainder of each student’s degree, not to exceed eight semesters of full-time enrollment or a total of 128 attempted credits, unless a single major officially requires more than eight semesters or 120 credits to complete (e.g., music therapy, 135 maximum attempted credits allowed or music education, 139 maximum attempted credits allowed). Attempted credits are inclusive of all transfer and articulation credits as well as credits attained by placements and exams.
• Scholarships are renewable for each semester provided that the above conditions are met and recipients are in good academic and disciplinary standing.
• The total amount of Berklee scholarship funding can range up to, but not exceed the cost of tuition.

Division Awards

Division awards are given to Berklee College of Music students demonstrating high academic and artistic achievement within their respective academic divisions. These relatively small awards are generally decided in the spring semester and issued based on academic division. Students who are eligible will be notified.

No application or request for consideration is necessary for the Thrive Scholarship or division awards. All students who are eligible are automatically considered and, if awarded, notified via email. Berklee Online continuing students can apply for a scholarship if they’ve earned 90 credits towards an online degree and meet the other eligibility criteria.

Special Circumstances Appeal Grants

We recognize that due to extenuating circumstances you may experience temporary challenges affecting your financing plan. Berklee allows all campus-based students to submit a special circumstances appeal to be considered for temporary need-based institutional funding. Domestic students must have a FAFSA on file and international students must have a CSS Profile on file for their appeal to be considered.

Berklee Online students are not eligible to submit a special circumstance appeal.

To that end, these terms are designed to help students make consistent, purposeful, and on-time progress towards earning a degree or diploma as affordably as possible. Consider these conditions not only as standards that students need to meet to maintain their scholarships, but also good practices towards achieving their goals.

The following are the conditions for Berklee institutional scholarships for undergraduate study in a degree or diploma program at either the Boston, Massachusetts, or Valencia, Spain, campus, awarded to Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory at Berklee entering students. The following do not apply to awards for Berklee Online, graduate programs, summer programs, or any non-matriculating program. This policy is effective for new entering students as of the fall 2024 semester.

• The Berklee institutional scholarship amount awarded will be divided equally between the student’s first two semesters of full-time study.
• For first-time, first-year students, Berklee institutional scholarships will be awarded for up to eight semesters of full-time enrollment, starting with a student’s first semester of enrollment at the college, and will be limited to degree or diploma requirements, unless a single major officially requires more (for example, majors in music therapy or music education).
• For students transferring from another institution, including Berklee Global Partner institutions, Berklee institutional scholarships will be limited to remaining degree or diploma requirements, for up to eight total semesters of enrollment. Semester enrollment begins accumulating from a student’s first semester of enrollment at the college.
• Students who have completed all graduation requirements for their course of study or who attend beyond eight total semesters at the college will no longer be eligible to receive Berklee institutional scholarships. Institutional aid will only cover the program-specific required private lessons for a student’s major.
• Scholarship recipients must meet the college’s SAP policy to be eligible to enroll and receive their scholarship.
• Students enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits are considered full time and receive their full scholarship, however, in order to remain on track to graduate within eight semesters, it is recommended that students plan to take 15 credits per semester.
• Students who attend part-time in a semester will be eligible for prorated (login required) Berklee institutional aid (scholarships and grants). Enrolling part-time will count as a semester of usage, so students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to ensure they are on track to complete their program within eight total semesters of enrollment.
• Berklee College of Music scholarship recipients will be required to provide services to the college, which may include their participation in performances, ensembles, project bands, auditions accompaniment, and/or any other Berklee-related activity that is deemed appropriate.
• A change of principal instrument or failure to perform on the principal instrument will result in a review of the award decision and may result in the loss of eligibility for renewal of the award.
• Berklee College of Music institutional scholarship recipients will meet with their academic advisor in the Center for Student Success prior to declaring their major to create an on-time degree completion plan. The Policy Handbook states that all Berklee College of Music students are required to declare a major field of study by their third semester of credit standing. To stay on track for graduation, it is strongly advised that the declaration of major paperwork be submitted prior to a student’s assigned online registration time during their second semester.
